Two Nlaka'pamux Lidded Baskets in Bold Pattern
Two lidded coiled baskets made by Nlaka'pamux (Thompson) weavers, reproduced as Plate 11 of the Bureau of American Ethnology coiled basketry monograph. The lower basket's design was recorded from the weavers' own words as Mouth at Coldwater and Notch in the Nicola Valley, and some told Teit the pattern was adapted from settler sources, evidence of a living, changing art. The Nlaka'pamux are Interior Salish neighbours and relatives of the Secwepemc. Published in Coiled Basketry in British Columbia and Surrounding Region by H. K. Haeberlin, James Teit and Helen H. Roberts, edited by Franz Boas, in the Forty-first Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology (Washington, 1928).
