Eight Nlaka'pamux Baskets with Flower Designs
Eight Nlaka'pamux (Thompson) coiled baskets, reproduced as Plate 28 of the Bureau of American Ethnology coiled basketry monograph. The design vocabulary recorded from the weavers includes Leg, Foot, Double hook and Net, Sharp points and Arrow points, and Flower designs named for the buttercup and larkspur. Each name varied between communities such as Nicola, Lytton, Spuzzum and Spences Bridge, preserving local voices inside the ethnographic record. Published in Coiled Basketry in British Columbia and Surrounding Region by H. K. Haeberlin, James Teit and Helen H. Roberts, edited by Franz Boas, in the Forty-first Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology (Washington, 1928).
