Basket and Suitcases by Weaver Katherine Eugene
Three pieces of imbricated coil basketry, including a basket and two basketry suitcases, made by the weaver Katherine Eugene and photographed by Harlan I. Smith at the Bella Coola cannery where she was working in 1923. Smith recorded her prices, from two dollars for the basket to twenty five dollars for the large suitcase said to outwear an ordinary dress suit case. Imbricated coiling is the hallmark technique of Interior Salish weavers; Katherine Eugene's home community was not recorded in the caption.
