Twelve Nlaka'pamux Face Painting Designs
A colour plate recording twelve documented face painting designs of the Nlaka'pamux (Thompson) people, published in The Salishan Tribes of the Western Plateaus by James Teit, edited by Franz Boas, in the Forty-fifth Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology in 1930. Face painting in red and other pigments carried personal and social meaning across the Interior Salish plateau. The designs were recorded by Teit, who lived at Spences Bridge and worked with Nlaka'pamux knowledge keepers for decades.
