A Weaver and a Girl Coiling a Basket
An Interior Salish woman coils an imbricated cedar-root basket while a girl beside her prepares root splints, in a photograph reproduced as Plate 2 of the Bureau of American Ethnology monograph on coiled basketry in British Columbia. The image documents the living practice behind the finished baskets: coiling, sewing and imbrication were learned by watching and helping from childhood. Published in Coiled Basketry in British Columbia and Surrounding Region by H. K. Haeberlin, James Teit and Helen H. Roberts, edited by Franz Boas, in the Forty-first Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology (Washington, 1928).
